Member information

VCI was established in 2000 when the volunteer centres then in existence in the Republic of Ireland came together to share experiences, support one another and discuss how best to carry out their duties. In 2001, VCI had adopted a constitution, membership criteria and agreed aims and objectives. Chief amongst these was a commitment to supporting existing volunteer centres, encouraging the emergence of new centres and promoting volunteering in Ireland.

Mission

VCI aims to increase the extent, range and quality of volunteering in Ireland. We believe this is best achieved through the establishment of an accessible, transparent and flexible national volunteering infrastructure made up of local volunteer centres working together in a communicative and cohesive way.

Our mission, therefore, is to:

  • Support and enable the development of a national volunteering infrastructure
  • Develop and promote best practice in volunteering
  • Through presenting a national picture, inform future initiatives and influence policy within the sector and publicly.

Activities

VCI:

  • Facilitates the national network of Volunteer Centres
  • Promotes the national network of placement services provided by Volunteer Centres
  • Develops best practice within and across Volunteer Centres
  • Assists Volunteer Centres to develop the capacity of organisations they work with

In addition, we

  • Organise Give It A Swirl Day, the national day of volunteering
  • Manage www.volunteer.ie, the national portal for volunteering in Ireland which hosts a national database of volunteering opportunities.
