Member information
The Associazione Nazionale Pubbliche Assistenze – National Association providing assistance to the general public – dates from 1860, initially in the form of groups of volunteers engaged in solidarity for those in need. Gradually, those groups structured themselves into regional organisations active throughout Italy in areas such as rescue, disaster relief, assistance to the disadvantaged and public health. Due to the need for coordination at the national level, they joined in 1904 in Spoleto, Italy, to form the Federazione Nazionale delle Società di Pubblica Assistenza e Pubblico Soccorso. The Association got its current name – ANPAS – in 1989.Today ANPAS is an independent, unified national organisation, based on democratic and constitutional principles. Its main objectives are the creation of a solidarity-oriented and fair society; the protection, support, promotion and coordination of organised volunteering; the protection of civil rights and children’s rights; and the promotion of humanitarian aid. Its activities include emergency medical care, ambulance services, social programmes, civil protection, and foreign aid and development.
With its 90,000 volunteers and 400,000 members, ANPAS is the largest voluntary organisation in Italy. The activities of ANPAS are also supported by 2,200 professional staff and 1,000 civil service volunteers. Representing 867 member organisations and 228 sections, ANPAS is currently operating in 19 regions, at the local, national and international level.
